In Africa, hydropower is a significant player in the energy sector, providing both opportunities and challenges. With a wealth of untapped hydroelectric potential, this renewable energy source offers a reliable means to meet growing electricity demands. However, the development of hydropower projects in the region often faces environmental and social concerns, including habitat disruption and potential displacement of communities.

Mozambique

Supported by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), we have delivered a capacity building programme in Mozambique. The programme involved an official assessment Mphanda Nkuwa HPP, which is the most strategic and high-profile hydropower project being developed in Mozambique. The developer has taken recommendations from the assessment and will prepare new ESIA with plans to certify the project in 2024. Our team of Accredited Assessors have also conducted an assessment of Cahora Bassa and discussions are underway for more assessments in the Zambezi basin.
