Progress made on the World Bank capacity building programme in the Zambezi basin
IHA Sustainability has been appointed by the World Bank to conduct a long-term programme of capacity building for sustainable hydropower, using the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol, for a range of hydropower developers in the Zambezi Basin in southern Africa.
As part of the programme, IHA Sustainability has delivered Protocol workshops to ZESCO (Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation), ZRA (Zambezi River Authority), and HCB (Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa, Mozambique). IHA Sustainability is also in contact with ESKOM Malawi to engage them in the programme. IHA Sustainability will continue to provide on-the-job training support and guidance to each organisation through an internal assessment of a project of their choice. The programme also involves: regional-level workshops to share experience; provision of expert advice on addressing gaps identified through the internal assessments; and development of a tool for the management of actions arising from the internal Protocol assessments. The first regional-level workshop to share experiences will take place in early 2017.
