KAREN LEE SUAN PING
Karen is a Manager in the Research & Development Department of Sarawak Energy Berhad. She holds a B.Eng. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Malaya in Malaysia. She started her career in Sarawak Energy since 2007, in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) section working on EIAs, Environmental Management Plans and Environmental Monitoring Reports for thermal and hydro power projects. Since 2010, she moved on to conducting environmental studies in greenhouse gas emissions from hydropower reservoirs in accordance with the UNESCO/IHA GHG Measurement Guidelines for Freshwater Reservoirs, working with SINTEF, Environnement Illimité and Université du Québec à Montréal. In 2012, she established the Hydropower Environmental Sustainability Program within Sarawak Energy, focusing on research in Aquatic & Terrestrial Ecology, Geomorphology and Limnology, implemented through research collaborations with local academic institutions within Sarawak. She now leads her team in working with multiple business stakeholders within Sarawak Energy as well as continued collaboration with external agencies and academic institutions in the area of Aquatic & Terrestrial Ecology, Greenhouse Gases & Hydrogen Sulfide, Downstream Flow Regimes and Environmental & Spatial Analysis to develop and implement a research blueprint for hydropower environmental sciences for Sarawak Energy, ensuring that these initiatives are aligned with good international industry practices, such as that of the International Hydropower Association.
