Edwin Sia Sien Aun
Edwin is a Senior Biologist under the Environmental Sciences division of the Research and Development (R&D) department of Sarawak Energy. He holds a doctorate in Microbial Ecology and Biogeochemistry and a B.Sc. in Biotechnology, both from Swinburne University of Technology. Prior to joining Sarawak Energy, he has had attachments across various research institutions as part of his post-graduate research programme, notably: i) Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI), South Korea ii) State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research (SKLEC), Shanghai and iii) Earth Observatory Singapore (EOS, NTU). He has also led and participated in multiple (often multi-stakeholder) scientific expeditions in the rivers of Sarawak, Malaysia and twice in the Arctic (Svalbard).
Edwin is currently leading the research of greenhouse gas emissions from hydropower reservoirs in Sarawak Energy in accordance with the UNESCO/IHA GHG Measurement Guidelines for Freshwater Reservoirs. He is keen to utilise automation for field process improvements as well as remote sensing strategies to enhance the large-scale monitoring of sinks or sources of greenhouse gases in hydropower reservoirs. He is hopeful in using this information for informed management/mitigation strategies and for the eventual contribution towards sections of the Hydropower Sustainability Standard that his work is involved in.
