San Roque Multipurpose Project awarded Silver certification under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard
The San Roque Multipurpose Project in the Philippines has achieved Silver certification after being assessed under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard.
In addition to providing 435MW of installed power capacity, the project provides vital benefits to Central Luzon island, including irrigation and flood protection for local communities.
Project developers have made substantial efforts to tackle technical challenges like reservoir sedimentation, heavy metal contamination and ecosystem health. At the same time, project-affected communities have been compensated and are further supported through dedicated livelihood programmes.
Joerg Hartmann, independent consultant and lead assessor of the project, said: “San Roque is a prime example of how multi-purpose projects can transform a region. Located in a region prone to extreme weather events, it has protected communities from typhoon floods and ensures water supply for irrigating local rice fields.
“However, it’s also a reminder that such successes don’t happen in isolation. Political will and strong institutional cooperation have been critical in turning promising initiatives into reality, as seen in the project’s participatory monitoring program and watershed protection initiatives.
This certification demonstrates that even when projects are contested initially, they can significantly improve the livelihoods of affected people with persistent efforts and dedication.”
The San Roque Dam first began operation in 2003. You can find out more on the San Roque Multipurpose Project assessment profile.
