Training academy launches new series of online hydropower ESG courses

The Hydropower Sustainability Alliance (HSA) has launched a new series of online courses to equip professionals with practical tools and strategies for addressing and managing ESG impacts in hydropower projects.

The first course in the series focuses on Environmental and Social Management in Hydropower. Participants will gain essential knowledge and tools to identify, assess and manage E&S impacts, aligning their projects with international best practices as outlined in the Hydropower Sustainability Standard.

The course series is designed for flexible learning, allowing participants to study remotely at their own pace. Upon completing a course, participants will receive a certificate of achievement.

What does the E&S course include?

The course on E&S management in hydropower covers the essentials of the ESIA process, equipping participants with knowledge on how to gather critical data and develop effective mitigation strategies to secure project approval.

It also explores the essential components of a comprehensive Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP), providing key insights on how to implement plans that address identified impacts effectively.

Grounded in international good and best practices, the course demonstrates how hydropower projects can meet or exceed global benchmarks for E&S management under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS).

“This new course is suitable for any hydropower professional seeking to advance knowledge on E&S management,” said Amina Kadyrzhanova, Senior Sustainability Specialist at HSA.

“Whether you work in project development, E&S consultancy, sustainability compliance or in government, the course provides the foundational tools and insights needed to effectively address environmental and social impacts while aligning with global best practices."

Content for the E&S course was developed by the HSA team alongside Doug Smith, an independent consultant and HSS Accredited Lead Assessor.

You can sign up for the E&S course for a fee of €500 + VAT, with a 10% discount available for members of HSA or the International Hydropower Association. To get access to the discount code, please email training@hs-alliance.org.

What other topics will the course series cover?

More courses will be launched in 2025, exploring topics covered under the HSS. This includes crucial aspects of sustainable hydropower development such as biodiversity, resettlement, labour and working conditions, hydrological resource, and climate change mitigation and resilience.
