Hydropower Sustainability Alliance Wins Prestigious IAIA Global Award

The Hydropower Sustainability Alliance (HSA) has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Global Award by the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA), recognising its significant contributions to advancing sustainability practices in the hydropower sector.

The IAIA Global Award celebrates organisations that have made exceptional contributions to enhancing assessment practices with tangible benefits for nature conservation and project development.

Past recipients of the award include the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Arctic Council, the Danish Institute for Human Rights, and the World Bank, placing the HSA in esteemed company.

“Honoured to receive this recognition”

The accolade was presented at the IAIA24 conference in Dublin, Ireland, where HSA Executive Director João Costa and Deputy Executive Director Alain Kilajian accepted the award on behalf of the organisation.

In a joint acceptance note, they said: "We're honoured to receive this recognition, which underscores our unwavering dedication to creating and implementing rigorous and transparent sustainability systems within the hydropower industry.

"This keeps us inspired and committed to advancing sustainable practices for a just transition."

HSA extended its gratitude to its Governance Council and partners, whose support has been instrumental in achieving the success recognised by the award.

This recognition reinforces HSA’s commitment to fostering sustainable development in the hydropower sector through the implementation of the Hydropower Sustainability Standard, ensuring that projects balance environmental, social and economic considerations in their implementation.
