Sustainability assessment overview
The Santo Antônio Hydropower Project on the Madeira River was first assessed in 2014 using the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (HSAP), which identified two significant gaps related to Indigenous Peoples and Resettlement. Since then, Santo Antônio Energia has taken action to close these gaps and strengthen its social and environmental performance.
The 2025 assessment under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS) confirmed progress across many areas. The project has provided fair compensation and benefits to local communities, supported good working conditions, and invested heavily in biodiversity initiatives. Monitoring shows that water quality and sediment levels have remained stable, and cultural heritage has been carefully preserved.
Some challenges remain, including ensuring long-term improvements in livelihoods for families compensated in cash, advancing targeted conservation for endangered aquatic species, and improving timely support for Indigenous Peoples. Overall, the project has strong governance, operates safely, and continues to build on its commitments to sustainability and climate resilience.
The public consultation period on the Preliminary Assessment Report of the Santo Antônio Hydropower Project is open from 29 September to 27 November 2025.
